Woods & Finishes
Our benches are predominantly made from hardwoods, and can be given either a painted or natural finish.
The choice of finish is ultimately yours but we would recommend three main types:
For outdoors our preferred option for our Oak benches is a mixture of very good quality wood preservative and boiled linseed oil. This mixture aims to feed and protect the bench whilst its natural silvering takes place. This is the oak's own protection and happens over the course of a year or two - you can re-oil if you wish but it is not essential.
For indoor benches we suggest that our oak benches are waxed, a mixture of turpentine and beeswax which gives a beautiful finish.
For our painted benches, either indoor or outdoor, we suggest OS country colours. These are micro-porous - they allow the timber to breathe and will allow any moisture to escape. The manufacturers of this paint say it should last for 5 - 10 years before repainting is necessary.
